Extracting Energetic Intrusions

Extraction work is one of the many traditional shamanic healing techniques used by many, many shamanic cultures worldwide.

What Intrusions Are

Extraction is one of the shamanic healing techniques performed as part of a Middle World journey, which means that the shaman is operating in the energetic analog of the world we most commonly agree on as our everyday "reality".   Our bodily energy fields can become infiltrated by "foreign" energies, energies that are not of ourselves, and which disrupt our normal way of being, sometimes causing discomfort, irritation, even pain and disease.

An intrusion can be caused deliberately, for instance when we argue with someone and "throw barbs".  Though we think of these as merely verbal, with sufficient hurtful intent, we can send energetic forms at the other person, where they can lodge and cause dysfunction.  Intrusions can also be accidental; sometimes being in the path of someone who is very angry can be sufficient to receive one of their energetic intrusions.  Even though they may not mean to, the other person's anger can be so intense as to form into an intrusion which lodges into our own energy body.  Intrusions are, in essence, "congealed" energy constructs that don't belong where they have come to reside.   Energy in and of itself is neither good nor bad, so the shaman views an intrusion as an imbalance that can be corrected by helping energy return to its proper place.

Removing energetic intrusions can restore a person's energy field to its normal harmoniously functioning state, thus helping alleviate chronic pains, irritations, emotional issues and restoring one to balance.

Extracting Intrusions

When a shaman's allies indicate that a client has intrusions which are to be removed, the shaman embarks on a Middle World journey and asks to be shown the intrusion.  An intrusion will often "look like" something that we know in ordinary reality, such as a knife, a rope, a sword impaling the client, or it might look like a rock, or a bone.  But it is generally clear that the intrusion "does not belong", is not harmonious with, the client's normal, "native" energy body.

Once the intrusion is identified, the shaman then asks his or her allies what the best means of extracting the intrusion might be.  While safely merged with his/her Power Animal, the shaman might simply pull the intrusion out using claws, teeth, or paws.  The intrusion is then safely disposed of in the manner that the allies have previously given the shaman.  Sometimes, a more complex route must be taken to remove a stubborn intrusion.  The shaman man sing, drum, chant, or dance with the client to loosen the intrusion and make it easier to fully remove.  The smoke of burning sage or other sacred herbs may also be used to help identify, loosen and extract the intrusion.

Sucking extraction is another method used by many peoples the world over.  Sucking extraction is used when the intrusion is not solid, or when pulling/clawing/cutting methods won't work.  While fully merged with the Power Animal, the shaman sucks the substance of the intrusion out of the client's body either into his own mouth or into a sucking extraction tool that is specially made and energized for this specific purpose.  The intrusion is then spit and/or heaved out into a waiting vessel containing charged water or another substance that the allies have directed the shaman use for this type of healing.  The intrusive substance is sucked and spit back out until none is left.  If using a sucking tool, the tool is then cleansed in water or salt water, or in what ever way the allies have directed.  Sometimes a crystal is embedded in the tool to serve as a receptacle for the extracted substance.  In that case, the crystal is then cleansed along with the tool itself, then charged by the allies' direction for its next use.  A caveat:  though powerful, sucking extraction is very specialized and should not be attempted without special training and supervision by an experienced practitioner.

Once free of intrusions, the client is likely to feel a sense of increased ease, and cessation of irritations, pain and dysfunction.
