Psychopomp
The word psychopomp means "conductor of souls", and the job of a
psychopomp is to conduct souls to the land of the dead, or to conduct
them into the world for a birth. Psychopomp can also be the job
of conducting a soul to its
appropriate place. In both religion and
mythology, psychopomps abound: Hermes, Charon, Anubis, so
many.
Psychopomp work is often rather easy, and sometimes becomes necessary
as a result of the work of other shamanic healing modalities such as
depossessions, possibly extractions, and in cases of hauntings.
Simply put, the shaman along with his helping spirits dialog with a
soul to help take him to the land of the dead. This is something
that we in Western society do not always do as part of the death and
dying
process. Other societies pay much attention to making certain
that the soul of the departed is ready and thoroughly prepared for his
or her journey after life.
I employ psychopomp skills as a result of finding a wandering suffering
spirit, after a Compassionate Depossession,
and occasionally when doing Space
Clearing.
Fred J. Fritz says
Throughout
time, the shaman has carried the responsibility of escorting
the souls of kindred members to the realms of beyond. Today this
service is still greatly needed. Although the knowledge of how to
accomplish this task has faded as the close-knit tribal community has
given way to modern civilization, shamanic practitioners are
re-discovering the call to guide souls, or to act as psychopomp,
inadvertently through ecstatic journeys.
Legendary
works such as the various "Books of the Dead" provided maps of the
afterlife. But what is the destiny of those who have not been exposed
to these manuals of post mortem navigation? Without this directional
knowledge, many souls become stuck in the liminal space between realms.
Thus, the need of a guide to assist in completing the crossing.
