Energies
and Spirits of Place
Before shamanism, I became interested in Feng Shui.
Feng Shui is, at its core, an energy medicine method for working with
the energies that inhabit the spaces in which we live, work, and have
our being to harmonize them and make them flow and operate at their
best. Feng Shui is an ancient art, and if done well produces
spaces that are harmonious, pleasant, and which support the activities
being done within them.
Years ago I had the great fortune to stumble across a lovely little
book by Karen Kingston called Creating
Sacred Spaces with Feng Shui which I've noted on the References page. It's one of my
favorites, because she works from the Balinese model of gently working
with spaces and energies and omits the formulaic approach that many
books on Feng Shui take. From Ms. Kingston's accounts, Balinese
life is very shamanic indeed, and she gives many simple ways of
creating beautiful and elegant spaces that are alive and sparkling with
healthful energy.
I take her approach a couple of steps further and work with the allies
of the specific places, engaging them and asking what they want, and harmonizing the
space and the living and working relationships for both the seen and
the unseen occupants.
